Surfing doesn’t rely on “waves”, what are the black technologies behind electric surfboards? Can it float and glide on the water surface?
I don’t know if anyone has seen the shoe soles used by shoemakers in the past. This surfboard is a bit similar to it. People can slide vertically on the water surface while standing on it, just like flying a sword. What exactly is its working principle? Why can a small board “hang” a person weighing over a hundred pounds on the water?
An electric surfboard that can be suspended on water
When it comes to surfing, friends who enjoy marine activities should all like it. In the past, traditional surfing equipment relied on the waves of seawater, but with the development of technology, electric surfboards have become emerging devices.
The biggest feature of this electric surfboard is that it can achieve surfing without waves through its own electric device.
However, its power comes from an internal lithium battery, which can provide about an hour of kinetic energy. In addition to entertainment, this surfboard also has a “rescue mode”. Although it has a unique appearance and is very cool to use, its price is indeed beyond the reach of many people. It is reported that the retail price of such a surfboard is $5000.
Working principle of electric surfboard
The appearance of this surfboard is very unique. In addition to the “deck” where people stand, a longer pole is connected below, and a small hydrofoil is installed at the bottom of the pole.
This hydrofoil is the core component of an electric surfboard, which looks like the wings of an airplane. Using Bernoulli’s principle, the pressure is low in areas with high flow velocity, so a significant pressure difference can be formed on both sides of the hydrofoil.
Then, driven by the propeller, the surfboard can slide forward. As the speed increases, the pressure difference on both sides of the hydrofoil also increases, allowing the surfboard to be lifted out of the water and appear to be “flying” on the water. The operator only needs to control the balance, speed, and direction through the remote control in their hand.
Why can lithium batteries work in the sea?
As we mentioned earlier, the power source of this electric surfboard is the underwater propeller, and the rotation of the propeller is driven by a built-in lithium battery. So the question is: why can lithium batteries work in water?
First of all, we need to know that lithium batteries are batteries made of lithium metal or lithium alloy as positive and negative electrode materials, using non-aqueous electrolyte solutions. However, due to the highly reactive chemical properties of lithium metal, the processing, storage, and use of lithium metal all have very high environmental requirements.
But under normal circumstances, lithium batteries are prone to short circuits when exposed to water, especially when water contains sodium ions. Someone once conducted an experiment where a lithium battery was thrown into a water tank, and as a result, the battery exploded directly.
But why is the lithium battery in the electric surfboard okay? Firstly, it is in a sealed environment where seawater does not enter the interior of the lithium battery. Secondly, it also has a certain waterproof device. As long as the surfboard is not damaged, the battery generally will not explode.
Final personal opinion:
Although this electric surfboard looks simple, it is actually very difficult to operate. For beginners, this type of surfboard is not suitable. It is better to practice with a traditional surfboard first, and then challenge this cool water “sword flying” after mastering certain skills. I don’t know if you’re interested in this type of surfboard? Do you think it will be popular among surfing enthusiasts?
